Born in Habana, Cuba, 1976, Raiko Nin immigrated to Miami, Florida at the age of eleven.  With him he brought his creative passion for art enriched by the talent of his own artistic parents.  Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, Nin was surrounded and inspired by abstract art, electro 80’s music, breakdancing, and the vibrant aerosol street movement known as “Wild Style”.  The influential subjects brought pure artistic energy and life into his creative expression that drove his talent.  In the late 1990’s, Raiko began showing his work in Miami, New York and Atlanta with the collaboration of the renowned contemporary art group “The Ink Heads”  During the fall of 2001, Nin was accepted into New World School of Fine Art, Miami, Florida.  Soon after, he received a Scholar Merit Award into Pratt Institute for the Arts in Brooklyn, New York.  Today the artist resides in Houston, Texas where he continues to develop new work with no limitations or boundaries.

During 1984, Raiko Nin was part of the movement in La Habana, Cuba, the youth were hungry for change in Cuba.  Enter the boombox phenomenon that transported them to a new magical spiritual place.  A modern musical subculture of action and motion was born…breakdancing exploded in the city streets! The vibrant energetic breakdance parties erupted throughout all urban areas.  The environment pulsed with a sense of confused nostalgia….from the eclectic mix of architectural elements from the neoclassical  to baroque to 50’s modernism, the patchwork city was full of decades-old automobiles dominating the streets.

EDUCATION

La Habana undulated to the rhythms boomed out for passionate groups of break dancers, busy reshaping the very subculture of Cuban youth.  This contrasting clash of varied period architecture, 80’s dance pop and young people starved for change in their lives permeated breakdancing circles, country-wide.  Large ’48 Oldsmobiles were parked curbside, just waiting for the music to blast out.  Magnificent wrought iron chandeliers hung suspended in another era, elegantly punctuating the surreal period architecture.

EXPERIENCE

Smooth granite floors flowed across patio front porches, lined with antique colonnades and massive archways….the perfect fusion for a unique subculture to sculpt a vibrant reality of sight, sound and fervent motion.  Through his photography the emotionally-charged art style, melange of sound, vision and unbridled energy is brought back to life today for all the world to enjoy.  Through Raiko’s photography “Memories of Habana 1984” he can honestly claim to be a pioneer in highlighting this epic and vital time in Cuban cultural history.
